Opportunities for a Better Tomorrow (OBT) exists to break the cycle of poverty and inequity through education, job training, and employment. OBT’s programs operate out of multiple locations and serve as a bridge to economic opportunity for youth, individuals, and families in underserved communities. Through various sector-based pathways, we offer programming that extends from high school equivalency programming to industry-certified training.  OBT is funded through a mixture of government contracts, corporate and foundation grants, and private contributions.

Position Summary
The Transition Specialist will lay a strong foundation for supporting job placement and preparation activities, securing, and sustaining internships, employment opportunities, or advanced training outcomes, as well as provide career planning support and professional development for program participants. The Transition Specialist will be able to leverage existing partnerships and new resources in NYC and the surrounding areas, as well as follow up on leads generated by leadership and other strategic partnerships.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Facilitate the process for young adults to effectively transition to employment, advanced training, and/or post-secondary education.
  • Provide case managing services to young adults on assigned caseload through their internship and transition to post-program goals.
  • Conduct and develop group workshops to build social emotional, occupational, and work readiness skills.
  • Facilitate development and instruction of employment readiness portfolio and competencies as defined by funder and OBT standards.
  • Conduct application intake assessments and ensure all required eligibility documentation for enrollment is collected; refer ineligible and/or differently suited applicants to other programs and services.
  • Enter case notes to indicate individual and programmatic progress into funder database and OBT’s internal database (Salesforce).
  • Collaborate and work with an interdisciplinary team including case managers, job developers, and college counselors.
  • Build and enhance community partnerships to address barriers to employment and education.
  • Participate in ongoing professional development to continuously improve practice. 

The Transition Specialist  Train & Earn Program at OBT is expected to have the following professional and personal qualities, skills, and characteristics:

  • Belief that workforce development and equity are inextricably linked and have a passionate commitment to OBT’s mission and vision.
  • Experience working with opportunity youth.
  • Working knowledge of workforce development.
  • Strong communication, interpersonal and conflict de-escalation skills.
  • Ability to develop goals and reduce barriers to education, program persistence and employment through effective case management and counseling strategies.
  • Ability to manage competing priorities in a human-focused performance-based environment.
  • Adept problem solver who brings energy and enthusiasm to the work.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office; database management–i.e., Salesforce and/or PTS preferred.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in social work or human services or related field, preferred.
  • Experience working with young adults.
  • experience in developing curricula and facilitating group workshops.
  • Culturally competent practice.
  • Knowledge of workforce and positive youth development.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office; database management–i.e., Salesforce and/or PTS preferred.
