MSW/Mentor – Innovation Lab

As Opportunities for a Better Tomorrow (OBT) celebrates its 36th Anniversary, we are looking for a Mentor to provide comprehensive support to Opportunity Youth (17-24) in our new Cloud Computing Specialist Training Program at the Innovation Lab at Industry City in Sunset Park, Brooklyn. The Mentor will drive results in five major areas: (1) career counseling, (2) alumni/retention support, (3) social support, and (4) recruitment. Additionally, the Mentor will be responsible for monitoring and tracking progress across all areas. The Mentor will report to the OBT Program Director.

In September 2019, Opportunities for a Better Tomorrow will be implementing a new program in in partnership with Generation. Generation was founded by McKinsey & Company and is its own legal, non-profit entity active in 9 countries to date – USA, Kenya, Spain, Mexico, India, Hong Kong, France, Italy, Pakistan and UK – and is actively launching additional sites. Generation USA is currently live in 11 cities and is scaling rapidly to support learners across the country. Generation is the world’s largest, fastest scaling global employment program, providing young and mid-career adults with the opportunity to launch successful careers and change their life trajectories.
OBT and Generation will launch our first cohort of students in New York City for a 12-week boot camp that will prepare students for careers in the cloud computing field. The Mentor will launch a pilot phase to train at least 66 young adults over three cohorts over 7 months. Based on the success of our graduates and employer demand, we will continue to scale the program. This position will be co-located at OBT’s shared space in Sunset Park, Brooklyn.
Support program team with the delivery of material supports and wrap around services (e.g. Metro Cards, stipends, etc.); address potential barriers to successful outcomes for job attainment and retention by working with community partners to connect participants to social service and mental health resources; build relationships through individual support sessions, facilitating skill building workshops
Engage participants in collaborative, individualized career planning; monitor and track all participants’ career prospects, interviews, and other career-related information; conduct mock interviews and provide feedback to participants; connect participants to resources for professional attire
Support program team with recruitment efforts as needed such as interviewing candidates, participating in information sessions, and screening interested candidates; attend outreach events and reconcile initial and follow up calls for web inquiries
Alumni/ Retention Support
Make monthly phone calls to participants to provide ongoing support; visit participants on the job, as needed, to coach and support; address barriers to employment during the program and once outcomes are achieved
Collect and enter data into all relevant data tracking systems; provide updates and reporting as needed for program both internally and externally; track participant case notes, services and other program information as needed
Experience building strong collaborative relationships with young adults; working knowledge of case management and NYC resources to reduce barriers to employment; strong written and verbal communication skills; ability to collect and analyze participant data; should be self-reflective and open to feedback; must be positive, have a solutions-oriented attitude, goal-oriented and be able to prioritize and achieve outcomes in a fast paced environment; knowledge of strength based perspective, Positive Youth Development, Workforce Development and experience working with diverse populations and Opportunity Youth (17-24 years) a must; MSW or equivalent required (LMSW preferred)
