Math Instructor

Position Summary
Opportunities for a Better Tomorrow (OBT) is looking for a knowledgeable Math Instructor in our Advance and Earn, Young Professional’s Institute Program.  Work hours will be Monday through Thursday, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Under the supervision of the Academic Coordinator, the Math Instructor will be responsible for developing and facilitating educational level appropriate arithmetic content to  participants ages 16-24 in our pre-HSE and HSE level classes. The Math Instructor will work to create intentional content to facilitate educational gain for those in pre-HSE and TASC readiness for those in HSE. The Math Instructor will work closely with the team and under the direction of the Academic Coordinator to identify participants who can make educational gain and are bound for the TASC with additional 1:1 and small group instruction.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop interactive and intentional curriculum for pre-HSE and HSE students that seeks to facilitate grade gain, NRS level gain and/or TASC readiness in math
  • Track, monitor and input data on all funder and internally required student and program milestones and outcomes
  • Utilize dynamic platforms to facilitate classes in the remote environment
  • Facilitate meaningful and interactive classes onsite, when applicable
  • Employ strength based, youth centered approach to support strong attendance and participation
  • Develop, collect and track internal and funder mandated worksheets
  • Administer the TABE test
  • Work collaboratively with the Advance and Earn and Academic Team to ensure cohesive messaging and services to youth
  • Attend all required program, team and agency meetings
  • Attend trainings and monitor trends on optimizing student learning
  • Organize lesson plans to review in small groups and 1:1 sessions with students weekly
  • Identify students slated for educational gain and/or TASC attainment in need of additional 1:1 or small group support
  • All other appropriate duties as assigned by supervisor

The Ideal Candidate will:

  • Demonstrate the ability to develop and facilitate intentional academic content geared toward facilitating educational gain and/or TASC attainment
  • Work closely with the Academic team to identify gaps in educational services and provide recommendations
  • Ability to work closely with an interdisciplinary team to identify and respond to, as well as raise, participant academic, social, emotional, and vocational needs
  • Be passionate about providing educational opportunities and skills to opportunity young adults
  • Understand the positive correlation between educational opportunity and equity
  • Ability to meet deadlines and enter data in a timely and accurate manner
  • Have prior demonstrated success in developing and facilitating math instruction to a diverse group of learners at varying levels of proficiency
  • Demonstrate cultural competency in forming relationships with participants, community partners, and colleagues from diverse backgrounds
  • Demonstrate ability to work with internal and external partners
  • Be driven to create a strong culture of high accountability and high support

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree Required (Bachelor’s Degree in Education preferred)
  • Background in math instruction
  • Experience with science instruction, as well, preferred
  • Minimum of 2 years teaching experience
  • Experience in curriculum development and design
  • Experience in non-profit preferred
