Opportunities for a Better Tomorrow (OBT) exists to break the cycle of poverty and inequity through education, job training, and employment. OBT’s programs operate out of multiple locations and serve as a bridge to economic opportunity for youth, individuals, and families in underserved communities. Through various sector-based pathways, we offer programming that extends from high school equivalency programming to industry-certified training. OBT is funded through a mixture of government contracts, corporate and foundation grants, and private contributions.
Position Summary
OBT’s Bushwick, Brooklyn location is seeking a team member that has a unique balance of natural/developing leadership abilities, detail orientation, and excellent engagement and assessment skills. The day to day will be a diverse mix of supportive counseling, outcome planning, participant meetings, and recruitment.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Provide individual and group supportive counseling
- Develop and facilitate workshops to support and develop essential skills
- Assess and ensure comprehensive referrals to city agencies and other support services
- Ability to meet contract deliverables in a multi-service program
- Build strong, strength based and collaborative relationships with participants
- Manage and prioritize activities and tasks in a fast-paced environment
- Ability to work in a remote setting/virtual counseling
The Counselor at OBT is expected to have the following professional and personal qualities, skills, and characteristics:
- Belief that workforce development and equity are inextricably linked, and have a passionate commitment to OBT’s mission and vision
- Will be highly organized, enthusiastically mission driven and eager to grow and develop themselves, OBT Programs and their participants.
- Will have experience in supportive counseling and crisis intervention. Candidates should be committed to a model of high expectations with high levels of support and believe in the power of education and meaningful employment to change the life trajectory of young adults.
- Experience working with a diverse group of young people and those who have been impacted by systems (justice, foster care, and ACS)
- Working knowledge of Workforce Development, Youth Development and Trauma Informed care
Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree required/ master’s in social work, counseling preferred
- Minimum of 2 years of case management experience required
- Experience in Workforce and/or Education
